Senior Hardware Engineer

Job Description

  • Coordinate preparation of proposals, statements of work, specifications and engineering budgets;
  • Act as a coordinator for all technical phases of programs from inception through completion, provide regular guidance to the Engineering team and ensure progress follows a pre-established plan;
  • Generate and select design concepts through a rigorous methodology, and then map the engineering effort for product research, development, integration and test;
  • Act as primary technical interface with the Customer;
  • Participate in new business development with Customers, and develop engineering specifications for a wide range of products based on market or Customer requirements;
  • Oversee the design of both digital and analog electronic circuits for a broad range of products;
  • Oversee the development of weight, power, space claim, heat transfer, reliability and other budgets as required by the application, and maintain the discipline required to achieve these goals;
  • Oversee the design of electrical and physical interfaces for these products, and develop tools to validate them, including emulators as needed;
  • Ensure that designs comply with relevant electrical codes, military standards and safety requirements;
  • Implement a DoE (Design of Experiments) or similar methodology to obtain hard data for the purpose of decision making and risk mitigation;
  • Support production through the creation of test plans, tools and procedures;
  • Interface with other teams (Software, Industrial Design, Human Factors, etc.) to fulfill functional, packaging as well as other requirements;
  • Investigate pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, repair and maintainability, strength-weight efficiency, contractual requirements and cost;
  • Oversee the development of detailed product BOMs, and advocate strict configuration control within the Engineering team;
  • Review complete layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning;
  • Act as a senior technical resource/mentor for other members of the technical team, including participation in various technical reviews;
  • Prepare and present technical design and data at program review meetings;
  • Develop and ensure compliance with best practices and lessons learned from current and previous programs to improve designs;
  • Participate in DFMEA activities internally and with suppliers to ensure product failure modes and remediation are understood;
  • Participate in DTC/DFM activities internally and with suppliers to insure product design is cost effective and conforms to the manufacturing & assembly plans.

Required Skills

  • Engineering degree, plus at least 10 years of experience in design and development of mechanical, electronic, or hybrid systems.  A Masters in engineering or related technical field is desirable;
  • Experience and understanding of one or several of the following fields is considered essential: lithium energy storage, precision mechanics, dynamics and vibration, fluid mechanics and heat transfer, FPGAs ASICs and other high-integration electronic technologies, video and night vision, audio and video processing, firmware and embedded systems, software and man-machine interfaces, mechanics of materials, simulation and modeling.
  • Experience with OrCAD (schematic capture) and SolidWorks (MechCAD) considered an asset;
  • Knowledge/experience with preparing product and engineering specifications, and product performance test procedures or plans;
  • Good working knowledge of Microprocessor based controller design and testing;
  • Good working knowledge of communication circuits and protocols (e. g. CAN, Serial, etc.);
  • Strong analytic problem solving skills, using suitable tools;
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team; demonstrate good interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and limited supervision;
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
